All I needed was one nudge from one reader I respect to stop making my prose posts so looooong. Now I cap them at 1,500 words (usually shorter), break them up with subheads, and publish them as a series of posts, over a number of days, if I have a lot to say about something. Readers’ attention is limited, and it’s a gift.
I look forward to reading whatever it is that you publish next! Populism and technocracy, fatherhood, neurodivergence, fatherhood and neurodivergence, British television (especially Doctor Who), all of it. Although I must admit that I am antisemitism’d out at the moment so I do tend to look for pieces that are on other interesting topics.
As I said to Rivka in another comment on this post, I subscribed to a *lot* of people after 7 October and recently have unsubscribed to many of them, because it was just *too much*, both emotionally and in terms of time. The writers I'm still subscribed to (writing about antisemitism or about other things) are generally those who have an unusual perspective or a highly personal writing style.
Thanks for your honest post that I think so many myself included can relate to. For whatever it’s worth I’m totally fascinated with this “ I’d like to write about my first year of fatherhood, of being autistic and resisting the grievance oppressor/oppressed claims of the neurodivergence movement, about resilience and more.” —because as an art teacher I’ve had many kids with neurodivergent tendencies and always hope to gain more understanding. Also because I think anyone who obtained any level of higher ed in last 25 years has had to deal with the grievance/oppressor/oppressed framework and it’s fascinating how various fields or personalities have navigated it.
I feel like I need to support people who write about antisemitism. But I also feel like it’s a lot reading about antisemitism all the time since 10/7. Very heavy.
It is, definitely. I subscribed to a lot of people in the aftermath of 7 October, then, recently, I unsubscribed from many of them, as it was just getting too much, both in terms of mood and time. Plus, a lot of what gets written is repetitive.
Then, I started reading a hard-copy book on the Holocaust! Maybe not the best move, but I thought it was Three Weeks-appropriate.

That's very kind of you, Hether!

I have found your essays thoughtful and insightful, and I am grateful for the time and effort you put into them.
Thank you, Stephen!

Thank you, it's useful to see this!

I started reading a book that I didn’t realize was about the Holocaust.
I think that everything I am reading now is Tisha b’Av appropriate. Maybe I am being too dramatic.
In your corner! Always!
I’m thinking… I would read it..
Thanks, Rivka!
